Money & Buying

How much does a shipping container cost in the KC metro?

Used 20s run roughly $1,900โ€“$3,000 delivered; used 40s $2,500โ€“$3,900; one-trip units $1,500โ€“$2,500 above comparable used. Kansas-side totals add sales tax; Missouri-side currently don't. The price calculator turns your ZIP into an exact locked quote.

What sizes exist and which do I want?

20ft (160 sq ft) and 40ft (320 sq ft), each in 8'6" standard or 9'6" High Cube. Driveways and households โ†’ 20ft. Farms, businesses, and long approaches โ†’ 40ft. Racking or workshop plans โ†’ High Cube, always.

How much clearance does delivery require?

Straight approach of 60โ€“75 ft (20ft box) or 100โ€“120 ft (40ft box), 12 ft of width, 16 ft under wires, firm ground. KC clay after rain is the main local hazard โ€” gravel approaches never care.

Cash on delivery โ€” really?

Really, in the KC market: order for nothing today, inspect at the truck, pay cash, card, or Zelle once it's on your ground. Bring exact bills for cash; drivers don't carry change.

What if the box shows up damaged?

Holes or doors that don't work: reject it at the truck, in writing, photo attached โ€” replacement comes free. That right is in the paperwork, not a verbal promise.

New or used?

Used CW for function per dollar (most of the metro buys this); one-trip for visibility, build-outs, and maximum runway. Identical warranties either way. The full logic is on the new-vs-used page.

Ownership & Longevity

How long do containers last here?

One-trips: 25โ€“35 years. Used CW: 15โ€“25 with the underside kept dry. KC's real enemies are standing water under the box and neglected gaskets โ€” both cured by gravel footing and an annual door swing.

Renting versus buying?

Under ~18 months of need, rent (3-month minimum, all costs upfront). Over it, buy โ€” or rent-to-own at 5% down over 12โ€“48 months with a 33% discount on early payoff after 90 days.

Rules & Weather

Do containers need permits in the metro?

Temporary project boxes on private property: usually no. Permanent placement: accessory-structure zoning (setbacks, sometimes screening โ€” Johnson County runs strictest). Street placement: permits almost everywhere. Ten minutes with your city settles it.

Are containers safe in tornado season?

An empty 20ft outweighs most cars; loaded, it's going nowhere in any straight-line wind. Exposed rural placements can add corner anchors in an afternoon. Hail that destroys roofs leaves dents at most.

Logistics

Can you move a container I already own?

Yes โ€” empty-box relocations use the same tilt-bed process, priced by mileage. Loaded moves need the contents secured and are quoted case by case.

How fast is delivery?

Questionnaire within 24 hours of ordering, date confirmed within days, box on the ground usually inside 10 business days. A paid rush option exists for projects that can't wait.
